High speed rail project signals new phase of Sino-US ties

China’s ties with the United States are quietly moving to the next level, signaled by a high-speed rail contract and a string of hi-end investments that could help Beijing's transition towards an innovation based economy. Ahead of President Xi Jinping’s visit to the US last month, a consortium led by the China Railway Group signed a deal with XpressWest Enterprise to build a high-speed rail line that would link Los Angeles with Las Vegas. In Beijing, there is considerable enthusiasm that the 370 kilometer high-speed link, between the two iconic cities will open the floodgates for bagging much larger projects. The Chinese have already set their eyes set on the proposed high-speed link between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The 2029 timeline has been set for this mega undertaking, which will reduce travel time between the two cities to under three hours.

Solar powred train coach

Chennai: The Integral Coach Factory’s (ICF) trials, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, with solar powered coaches have been successful, but has now thrown open another weighty challenge.
The solar panels, while generating enough electricity to power a non-air-conditioned coach, are also creating a problem of adding to the deadweight of the coach. This means that coaches with the panels will have to be redesigned and engineered to ensure that the weight of the coach does not go up.

Railway Ministry tweeted the news tweet on Monday morning,

However officials in the city said it was not clear under which category of HSR lines these routes would fall. The railway ministry has divided its HSR category into 3 speed levels- 160kmph, 200kmph and 300 kmph, the last being touted as the bullet train.

New railway timetable disappoints passengers

MADURAI: The newly-released railway timetable that came into effect on October 1 has very less to offer to the rail users in the city.

There was lot of expectation among rail users as union railway minister Suresh Prabhu had told the budget will concentrate on infrastructure and announcement on new trains will take back seat.

Rail users' forum was active in predicting possible new trains, extension and changes in train timings.

But, there have only been changes in number of few trains and minor changes in schedule of passenger trains.

"This is the second consecutive year of Kanyakumari district not getting any new trains. Every railway budget had brought us some new trains or extensions in the past," P Edward Jeni, Secretary of Kanyakumari District Rail Users Association said.

Indian Railways increases speed of long-distance trains by 30 kmph

Upgradation enables WR and CR to save anywhere from minutes to hours; new schedule implemented from October 1

In what could be touted as a major achievement for the Indian Railways, the entity has managed to up the maximum speed of all the long-distance trains up to 130 kmph from the previous average of 100 kmph.

The railway officials want the trains to zip on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor at a whopping 350 kmph or even more. File pic for representation

Commenting on their achievement, railway officials claimed that the entire project required a technical overhaul. Based on this improvisation, the Western Railway (WR) and the Central Railway (CR) updated their schedules from October 1.

While the WR upped the speed of 42 trains, helping it save anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours and 35 minutes as compared to its earlier schedule, time saved by the CR by operating 17 trains as per the updated speed limit is anywhere between 5 to 15 minutes. Railway officials said the new schedule was implemented after months of trial and error.
