Railway to provide dustbins in all 60,000 coaches soon

New Delhi: All the 60,000 coaches in Indian Railways will soon be provided with user-friendly dustbins, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today said.

Barring air-condition (AC) and a few non-AC sleeper coaches, majority of coaches currently don't have dustbins resulting in problems in disposing garbage by the passengers in moving trains.

"All the 60,000 coaches will be provided with dustbins and the target will be reached as soon as possible," Prabhu said, reminding about the promise made in the Railway Budget this year, while addressing a conference on 'rail coach interior' here.

Newly designed interiors for coaches are ready at the workshop in Bhopal

This Diwali, India’s train passengers might get a surprise upgrade from Indian Railways, which is finally ready to hit the refresh button on some of its decades old, worn-out coaches.

Newly designed interiors for coaches are ready at the workshop in Bhopal with some help reportedly from the National Institute of Design. Judging by the prototype, they look nothing like the trains people are used to at the moment.

Railway is getting hefty investments, reforms beginning to show results

At a time when public investment is sorely needed to crowd in reluctant private investment, it is welcome to note that the Railways is rising to the challenge.
It is coagulating capital on a scale far in excess of what would be possible purely on the strength of support from the general Budget, lowering its operational costs, restructuring the decision-making process to make it faster and setting up a regulator to ensure fair treatment of private partners as they deal with the behemoth. The Railways’ job is to be a vital component of globalising India’s transport infrastructure.
Investing in itself to realise this goal also drives India’s growth. The goal to invest Rs 8.5 lakh crore over the next five years is ambitious but needed, to add and improve the quality of rolling stock, upgrade signalling and increase capacity along the routes that offer maximum revenue potential.
The Railways is raising resources in innovative ways: foreign direct investment in new-age locomotives and coaches, long-term, surprisingly low-cost debt from the Life Insurance Corporation, leveraging railway land around stations to develop commercial real estate via private sector partners, and setting up new corporations for new projects.
It is also developing projects for rail connectivity to many ports and mines. Strikingly, 17 states have agreed to set up special purpose vehicles to undertake projects, raising debt several times its equity to carry out investment.
The Railways expects large-scale procurement orders from the enterprises it owns to enhance the value of these companies that can be discovered by stake sales and listing, leading to larger mobilisation of debt for investment. This amounts to corporatisation of the Railways by the backdoor, without much resistance from the unions.
The Railways is aggressively moving to lower its fuel costs. The long-term strategy is electrification, while the short-term one is to become a licensee that can buy power directly from generation companies such as the Ratnagiri Gas and Power, which will sell it power at Rs 5 a unit, while the Railways pays Rs 7 a unit. Way to go!

Indian Railways to form SPVs with 17 states for infra development

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today said his ministry will form special purpose vehicles (SPVs) with 17 states to develop railway infrastructure.
“We are creating a special purpose vehicle with each state separately. There are 17 states, who have shown interest. It would be a joint venture,” Prabhu told PTI on the sidelines of the function to flag off local train at Pernem station in north Goa.
He said Goa, North-Eastern states and Jammu and Kashmir are not included in this scheme.
“For the 17 states, we will create SPVs. The state will invest the capital, along with the Centre, in this company (SPV), which will be used for development of railway infrastructure,” the minister said.
According to Prabhu, Maharashtra has decided to invest Rs 10,000 crore for next five years in this company.
“Now all the states are interested in signing. This is a good thing. We can develop additional infrastructure and also additional bandwidth,” he said.
He also announced 250 additional trains to clear the rush during forthcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival, which would be celebrated across Maharashtra’s Konkan region and Goa in September.
“Ganesh chaturthi is the most important festival in Goa. We have decided to run 250 additional trains to clear the rush,” Prabhu told a gathering at Pernem Railway Station today, where he flagged off the train between Pernem and Karwar.
Several railway divisions, including Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL), Central Railway, Southern Railway and others, will pitch in to ply the special trains.
Prabhu said 17 stations on KRCL route will have wi-fi facility and escalators will be installed in the stations, including Margao, Ratnagiri, Kankavali and Thivim.
