Indian Railways to commission 2,500 kms of projects to decongest choked network

Indian Railways will commission multiple projects running into 2,500 km to decongest its choked network, a major focus area of this year’s rail budget, to free up line capacities for faster movement of trains.

“The projects include commissioning of new lines, gauge conversion and doubling of existing tracks in certain busy stretches,” V K Gupta, member, engineering, Railway Board, told reporters.

NITI’S NOD FOR RLYS TO CAST ITS NET WIDE

In a shot in the arm for Indian Railways, the National Institution for Transforming India Aayog (NITI Aayog) has so far approved 15 of the 28 projects of the Railway Ministry related to network expansion, decongestion, terminal facilities and other amenities.

Buoyed by this, the Indian Railways has now fixed an ambitious target of commissioning 6.85 km of track per day in the current year as against the existing five km or less, of track daily.

From fast-tracking of projects to decongest choked networks to enhancing speed and punctuality of trains during the next couple of years, the Railways has earmarked a total of 77 projects involving doubling of tracks, laying of new tracks and gauge conversion in 24 of the busiest routes which include Delhi-Howrah, Delhi-Chennai, Howrah-Mumbai, Chennai- Mumbai and Delhi-Guwahati-Lindung among others.

Railway to build 6.85 km of tracks/day in FY16: Report

The Indian Railways plans to commission 6.85 km of tracks per day in the current fiscal year, up from 5.4 km a day in the last fiscal year. Overall, it will commission 2,500 km of tracks in FY16 against 1,980 km in FY15.

“Our consumption this year is expected to be 13 lakh tonnes of steel, 30 lakh tonnes of cement, 40,000 km of signaling cable and 7,000 tonnes of copper wire. This will be through a mix of direct and indirect demand. This is an assured demand,” V.K. Gupta, Member-Mechanical, Indian Railways has been quoted as saying.

Between FY16 and FY20, the Indian Railways will build 17,000 km of tracks, of which 2,000 km will be new lines, 4,000 km will be gauge conversion and 11,000 km will be doubling, he adds.

Siemens RailFusion to turn Big Data into Intelligence

Siemens launches RailFusion Big Data Asset Monitoring Software that monitors and analyses Data Points across an entire RailRoad Infra

Siemens, at Railway Interchange-2015 held at Minneapolis between October 4-7, introduced RailFusion, a software solution that monitors and analyzes data points across an entire railroad’s infrastructure including onboard and wayside assets like road crossings and end-of-train devices.

“On any given railroad there are trillions of data points being created by train systems and devices along a line, but this data is simply not being put into action,” said John Paljug, head of Siemens Rail Automation. “RailFusion brings all of these disparate data points together in one system and puts intelligence behind them, allowing railroads to make more informed, efficient decisions about how to operate and maintain their systems specific to their needs.”
