Mumbai: Indian Railways, the country’s largest employer, may go into a “debt-trap” and “become an Air India” due to the present Suresh Prabhu-led ministry’s policy of borrowing, former rail minister Dinesh Trivedi said while sounding a strong note of caution on the issue of a dip in its revenue.

“I think railways is absolutely in the dumps... railways is going the Air India way, in short. You can perhaps live without Air India, but not without Indian Railways,” he told PTI on the sidelines of an event late Tuesday evening.

People use all modes of transport to reach home for Dasara

On the eve of Dasara, the rush of passengers to reach their destinations across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and other States has reached the peak. An estimated 2.5 to 3 lakh people were said to have used public and other modes of transport on Wednesday to be home in time for the festival on Thursday.

Since 5 a.m. in the morning, the Mahatma Gandhi (MGBS) and Jubilee Bus Stations (JBS) that are the main hubs for the RTC were choc-a-bloc with people using every means they could to grab a seat. As is the standard operating procedure, the RTC adopted the ‘hub-and-spoke’ mode to de-congest the main terminals. The ‘hub-and-spoke’ model means that while people bound for destinations like Adilabad, Karimnagar and Nizamabad caught buses from the JBS, Warangal-bound passengers had to board at Uppal. People for destinations in neighbouring AP and those bound for Mahabubnagar, Kurnool, Bengaluru and other places in AP were the ones who came to MGBS.

Railways may go into 'debt-trap and become Air India', says former rail minister Dinesh Trivedi

Trivedi, who authored a parliamentary panel report in April raising concerns about railways' operations, said that there has been a dip in revenues from both passenger and freight operations and that has led to a situation where we are staring at the operating ratio (OR) shooting above the 100 mark.
