Rail Transport Can Create 10,000 Jobs Yearly- Union

Rail transport can create 10,000 jobs annually, if revived, says Mr Raphael Okoro, the President, Nigeria Union of Railway Workers (NUR).
Okoro told newsmen in Abuja yesterday that reviving the system was “very possible”, if government mustered the political will to create a functional and effective railway system.
According to him, the rail system is very key to the growth of every nation even though it is capital and labour intensive.
Okoro, therefore, advised the government to make the revival of the rail system a priority, stressing that if government spent N20 billion on one road, It would soon go bad due to the weight of the goods.

Mumbai CST Turns Blue for United Nations' 70th Anniversary

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was lit up in blue to mark the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.
UNITED NATIONS: More than 200 iconic monuments in nearly 60 countries lit up blue today to mark the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.

The celebration kicked off in New Zealand and Australia with the Sydney Opera House turning blue to commemorate the UN Day. In India, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was lit up blue to mark the day.

Landmarks such as the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, New York's Empire State Building, Tokyo's SkyTree Tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, Diana The Huntress Fountain in Mexico, the Hermitage in Russia, Edinburgh Castle and Central Hall Westminster in the UK, and Alhambra in Spain, light blue to help mark the founding of the UN.

Thefts in parcel compartments of Ranchi-bound trains passing through Uttar Pradesh have been a recurring incident for the past two weeks. The reason that comes to mind first is flawed arrangements, but railway police personnel have reasons of their own to cite.

"There have been several cases of thefts in recent times, but they are something more than mere thefts. There are many angles involved here - irregularities on part of parcel agents, rivalry among parcel agents, involvement of insiders. Even if to a certain extent, security lapses are not the only factor working behind these thefts," said a railway police requesting anonymity.

Railways withdraws 'Rail Neer only' circular, stalls sell other brands as well

Commuters drink tap water at a Borivli station platform stall on Friday as no mineral water bottles were available Dinesh Parabdna

In a reply to dna's query, GC Agarwal, WR general manager, said that IRCTC had written to WR that it will be able to supply Rail Neer to 14 mandated stations (stations where Railway Board has stipulated that only Rail Neer be sold) while the rest of the stations can sell other brands approved by the railways.

The railways, after causing lakhs of commuters severe hardship with its knee-jerk 'Rail Neer only' water policy at suburban stations for the past one week, has finally started getting a grip on the situation by Friday. Faced with the fact that Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation's (IRCTC)'s Ambernath Rail Neer plant cannot supply the entire demand for packaged drinking water (PDW) emanating from Mumbai's stations, WR authorities early Friday morning allowed stalls to sell other brands as well.

Centre starving Railways of funds, says Kharge

The former Railway Minister and leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, has blamed the Union government’s failure to provide gross budgetary support to Railways for its present financial problems.

Talking to presspersons here on Friday, Mr. Kharge said that governments, including the NDA government headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, had provided gross budgetary support to tide over the financial shortfall to take up new projects and fund the ongoing projects.

Mr. Kharge said that Railways were forced to take loans at high interest rates and ultimately the burden would be passed on to passenger and freight rates.

Railways to clamp down on rogue passengers

COIMBATORE: Recently, a train ticket examiner was assaulted by a ticketless passenger in a Coimbatore bound train, resulting in a deep knife cut across his palm. In a strong move to clamp down on such incidents, the Salem division of Southern Railway has decided that the Railways would file the FIR against the accused and follow-up the case.

This move comes after officials found that many train ticket checkers who suffered assaults, failed to file an FIR or complaint, to avoid the hassle of the appearing in court and following up on the case. "Even in the most recent incident, the ticket checker filed an FIR only after being persuaded by senior officials," said a railways official.

Prabhu builds a platform: Indian Railways is finally on the right track, using fresh pipelines of funding to modernise

Global growth is slowing down. Emerging markets are now dragging rather than boosting global economic growth. Though India’s near term GDP forecasts have been marginally reduced, the country is still viewed favourably. Investors no longer look at emerging markets as a homogenous asset class and are now more discerning.

Government has been working hard to ensure India is projected in the right light. Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with various ministries is making concerted efforts to attract foreign capital to fund India’s infrastructure and development agenda. Initiatives such as Make in India, the Smart Cities Mission and Digital India have captured significant global attention.

SRMU Arm-twists Southern Railway to Defy Railway Board Diktat on Bonus

CHENNAI: Despite a recent Railway Board circular directing all zonal railways to pay this year's Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) to eligible employees through electronic transfer into their salary accounts, around 30 per cent of Southern Railway staff, most of those in workshops, received it in cash.

This was allegedly due to armtwisting by the sole recognised union of the zone, Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU), which forced various departments of the railway to defy this order and offer workers an option of getting the bonus in cash as well.
