Most travellers in India know that the start of a festival season is a testing time.

If you have not planned well in advance, getting train tickets for a safe and comfortable journey is almost impossible just before and during the festival season.

Japan and China prepare terrain for Indian High Speed Rail Battle

HSR War China Japan
After fiercely battling it out in Indonesia, where China won the first round and has already signed the deal to build the 150 km Jakarta to Bandung High Speed Rail line, Japan and China are very aggressively competing on the Indian High Speed Rail (HSR) arena.
Japan has just offered to finance the 505 km high speed corridor that will link Mumbai to Ahmedabad. 15 Billion USD the total estimated cost, less than 1% the proposed interest rate. Japan would cover 80% of the project cost, and India would purchase 30% of equipment from Japanese companies.

Now, railway passengers can order fresh pizza, thalis via IRCTC's e-catering services

Kolkata: The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has launched a pilot project of a ‘station-based e-catering’ service allowing passengers to order meals as per their choice, which will be delivered at stations from popular private caterers.

In the first phase of the project, all trains passing through 45 specified railway stations, including nine in the east zone, namely Howrah, Sealdah, Guwahati, New Jalpaiguri, Patna, Bhubaneswar, Visakhapatnam, Kharagpur and Mughalsarai have been named.

Elevators to lift passenger amenity at Pune railway station

PUNE: Mechanized passenger lifts would be installed at Pune and Kolhapur railway stations for easy movement to passengers from one platform to another.

The Pune railway division has provided such elevators for the first time. The service is likely to start from April.

In phase I, two lifts each would be installed at the two stations at an estimated cost of Rs 1.09 crore. Each lift would accommodate a maximum of 16 passengers and carry them from a platform to the foot overbridge and the other way round.

Tenders have been floated and work orders will be issued soon, said a Pune railway official. At the Pune station, the lifts will be set up on platform numbers 2/3 and 4/5. At the Kolhapur station, the lifts will be attached to the old foot overbridge.

Waiting list getting longer for railway passengers in festival season

Long queues of passengers can be witnessed at ticket reservation counters at the city railway station as with festivities in the air everybody seems to be in haste to go to their hometown. In order to confirm their reservation, people are seen waiting for hours at the railway station. Introduction of many festival special trains by the Northern Railway authorities seems to have provided little or no relief to passengers, if long waiting lists and unavailability of confirmed seats/berths in most of the trains is any indication.

The city is a home to a large number of migrants. The condition is so pressing that there are long waiting lists and even “no room” status (when waiting list is exhausted) greets people who have been visiting the railway reservation counter for days in the hope to get their tickets confirmed.

Sanoj, a Bihar migrant said, “There is no chance of getting my ticket confirmed at this time. I wish to be with my family at home for Diwali but the waiting list is very long. I can’t take risk while waiting for confirmation of tickets.”

Ashok Kumar, who works with the NFL, said he was trying to get tickets for himself and his family for going to his native place in Maharashtra to celebrate the Diwali, but he was not getting tickets as the waiting list was too long for all trains. A railway official said most of the trains were running to capacity and even the waiting lists were getting longer ahead of the festival season. He said Railways might announce some more special trains to cater to the rush during this festival season.

Railway to soon run Mumbai-Goa double decker Shatabdi Express

Panaji, Oct 25: Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has announced that the Railways would soon start country’s first-ever double decker Shatabdi Express that would ply between Mumbai and Goa. ”One double decker AC train between Mumbai and Goa should run as Shatabdi.
