SRMU Bullies Southern Railway to Get Bonus in Cash

CHENNAI: Despite a recent Railway Board circular directing all zonal railways to pay this year’s Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) to eligible employees through electronic transfer into their salary accounts, around 30 per cent of Southern Railway staff, most of those in workshops, received it in cash. This was allegedly due to arm-twisting by the sole recognised union of the zone, Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU), which forced various departments of the railway to defy this order

Railways fast-tracks process to fill 10 GMs' posts

NEW DELHI: In an attempt to bring in administrative efficiency, the railways has expedited the appointment process for top level posts to fill up 10 vacancies of general managers (GMs) of zonal railways and 50 divisional railway managers (DRMs) in 2015.

The top level appointments in railways were mired in controversy in recent past due to alleged fixing for getting plum assignments, highlighted by the arrest of then railway board member Mahesh Kumar by CBI and delay in filling large number of vacancies.

Fibre ceiling at Bhubaneswar railway station caves in again

BHUBANESWAR: Passengers at the city railway station had a scare when a portion of the fibre ceiling came crashing down at platform no-1 on Monday. No injury was reported, the government railway police said.

This was the second time the fibre plates fell in the past one week. A similar mishap was reported on the same platform on October 20. The latest incident occurred at 12.30pm when the platform was jam-packed with passengers. "Luckily the plates did not fall on anyone. Though the plates are not heavy, they might cause injury if the these fall from a height," said a railway police officer.

The incident raised questions on the quality of work at the station. "I was walking through the platform no-1 to reach the platform no-4 when the ceiling fell. Luckily we escaped unhurt. We blame the railways for substandard work and poor safety measures," said Nikunj Khemani, a passenger.

Authorities of East Coast Railway (ECoR) cordoned off the area and engaged engineers to repair the damaged ceiling. "We will find out the fault. Safety measures are being adopted," said an ECoR officer.

Train track selfies: People warned after railway incidents caught on CCTV

People have been warned not to take selfies on train tracks after eight dangerous incidents were captured by CCTV at one level crossing in a single day.

Video footage from Matlock Bath station in Derbyshire shows adults and children posing for pictures, sitting on the track and conducting phone conversations while walking along the line.

Network Rail (NR) has urged people to pay more respect to the railway.
NR operations risk adviser, Martin Brown, said: "Level crossings in rural, picturesque settings such as Matlock may look like good opportunities for a photo but the railway is not a playground.
"Trains can come from either direction at any time and being distracted by chatting, texting or taking photographs while using the crossing significantly increases the risk of an incident."

Over 30 trains and 500 pedestrians and cyclists go through the Matlock Bath crossing each day.

Inspector Eddie Carlin, of British Transport Police (BTP), said: "The photos captured are extremely worrying. We are really concerned someone is going to get seriously injured or killed at the crossing.

"Trespassing on the railway is extremely dangerous and can have tragic consequences for those involved. I have had to tell devastated families that their loved ones are not coming home due to incidents such as this and it's heartbreaking.

"The railway is a dangerous environment. Trains travel at speed and can be silent and if people are trespassing on the tracks and are distracted taking photos, selfies or texting they really are putting themselves in danger."
BTP has increased patrols in the area and wants to speak to the people in the CCTV images from Matlock Bath. The incidents were all captured on August 30.

The number of level crossing users killed in Britain rose to 10 in 2014-15, the highest number since 2009-10.

NR has closed more than 900 crossing over the past five years and is investing £100 million to improve safety. Around 6,100 crossings remain in operation.

Metro commuters were in for a shock on Monday afternoon after a major earthquake rocked Delhi and the National Capital Region. All metro services were halted for 15 minutes as precautionary measure, because of which several interchange stations became overcrowded.

Even after the services were resumed, trains ran at a very slow pace and it took long for normal operations to be restored as a comprehensive safety check was undertaken by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
