Metro Rail: 18 lakh passengers and counting

Three-month-old facility continues to be a tourist attraction for many

About 18 lakh people have taken a ride in the Chennai Metro Rail ever since it was launched in June.

A Right To Information plea filed by The Hinduhas revealed that Alandur and Koyambedu have the maximum number of footfalls and Arumbakkam and Ekkatuthangal, the minimum.

The first service of Chennai Metro Rail was launched in June on the 10-km stretch between Koyambedu and Alandur after five years of construction.

According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), quite a lot of people take a joy ride through the entire stretch — from Koyambedu to Alandur.

“They want to have good value for the money they pay which is one of the reasons why these two stations have recorded the highest traffic. Not many board or detrain at Ekkatuthangal and Arumbakkam and that’s why we see a dip in traffic at these points,” a CMRL official said. The Chennai Metro Rail may be seen as a tourist attraction for a few more months, the official added.
