Railways mulling flexi fares for all trains

CHENNAI: Indian Railways is considering introduction of dynamic fares for all classes in all trains on the lines of air fares. The plan was mooted after the success of premium trains and Suvidha though fares were expensive, sometimes touching levels that are just 50% lower than air fares on many of the short routes.

As passenger traffic has been dipping in the last few years across the country, railways is looking at different ways to generate revenue from passengers on high-density routes. Different suggestions are being mooted by the commercial wing of railway zones because railways has limitations in expanding its network. Passenger earnings went up by 8.5% in April-September period when compared to the corresponding period last year though the number of passengers dipped.

Railways rolls up its sleeves to keep pace with rush on Chhath puja

Special ticket counters, affordable food, drinking water, toilets and LED screens have been provided at New Delhi and Anand Vihar railway stations.Photos: Sushil Kumar Verma

Sprawled on a thick green carpet, 40-year-old Anil Kumar is transfixed on the giant screen showing a Bhojpuri music video as the shamiana above covers him from the afternoon sun.

A couple of years ago, Mr. Kumar could have been jostling with thousands of other people for breathing space around this time.

Mr. Kumar is one of the estimated five lakh additional passengers who would be taking a train out of Delhi for east India to be at home just in time for Chhath Puja celebrations.

The train that would take him to Darbhanga in Bihar was scheduled to leave at 7 pm, but fearing he might not get space in an unreserved compartment, Mr. Kumar reached the New Delhi Railway station before 2 pm.

Speed trials conducted on a stretch of Bengaluru-Mysuru rail line

Zipping in a train that travels up to 100 kmph between Bengaluru and Mysuru could just be a reality. On Friday, the Commissioner for Railway Safety (CRS) took up a trial run, including speeds up to 100 kmph, on the newly laid tracks.

If the inspection is successful, this would mean that trains would be able to technically operate at those speeds between the two stations which would considerably cut the travel time between the two points.

Public transport system goes into a tailspin

Train services were hit on both the Tambaram and Avadi suburban routes. Poor communication by the railway authorities made the situation worse for commuters —Photo: R. Ragu

With heavy rain lashing the city and the suburbs since Thursday night, the public transport system was paralysed on Friday.

With the flooding of arterial roads, Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) services were hit. Commuters alleged that several services were stopped and MTC was running a skeletal bus service. Various sections of the suburban train services were affected as tracks were flooded.

While the MTC officials claim buses were operated normally despite heavy rain, people noted that only a few buses plied on the roads. They also complained about poor maintenance of buses, saying that several of them had leaky floors.

Arjun, a resident of Avadi, alleged that bus services between Avadi and Thiruvallur were stopped, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded.

However, a senior MTC official said buses had been diverted via Red Hills to Thiruvallur due to flooding of CTH Road caused by the breaching of Kavaraplayam lake.

Those commuting by train were no less unhappy. They suffered due to slow operation of trains and poor communication by the railway authorities. With the railway tracks flooded on the Tambaram and Avadi routes, the ‘slow’ movement and halting of trains at several places tested the patience of the passengers.

Kathir, a resident of Ambattur, who boarded the train at 9 a.m. at Ambattur Railway station reached the Moore Market complex railway station at 1 p.m.

Describing the nerve-wracking experience of having to spend four hours on a stretch that would normally not even take one hour to travel on, she said authorities manning the railway stations should have announced the extent of the delay. Commuters could then have made alternative arrangements.

The train services on the Chennai Beach-Tambaram route were disrupted due to the flooding of tracks at Guindy and Egmore.

The only train service that was operated without any hiccups was the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) from Chennai Beach to Velachery.

Many roads were flooded and trees uprooted in Tuticorin; inundation of railway track disrupts train schedule

Incessant rains in Tuticorin and several parts of the district wreaked havoc and threw normal life out of gear on Friday.

It started raining at midnight of Thursday and showers continued till Friday evening. The district administration declared holiday for schools and colleges. Rainwater stagnated on Palayamkottai Road, WGC Road, Victoria Extension Road, George Road, Tiruechendur Road and low-lying areas, severely affecting vehicular traffic.

Part of the roof of a fisherman’s house at Threspuram caved in on Thursday night. However, no one was injured as all the inmates were away from the portion of the house when the incident occurred, sources said. Tahsildar S. Chandran said that a cheque for Rs. 95,100 was given to the family under the Natural Calamity Fund. A tree was uprooted in the Fourth Street of Chidambara Nagar. The continuous rain caused inundation of railway track near Meelavittan which delayed arrival of Mysore–Tuticorin Express here by about 1.15 hours. Owing to inclement weather, the flight from Chennai landed in Tuticorin airport at 5.10 p.m., with a delay of two hours, and departed 20 minutes later on Friday.

Bandh called at very short notice upsets travel plans of the public; taxi operators make a killing as people were forced to depend on them

The sudden turn of events in Dakshina Kannada district, from prohibitory orders to the bandh on Friday, left thousands of passengers arriving in the district as well as the city, stranded as buses and autorickshaws remained off the roads since morning.

The late-Thursday-night decision of the Vishwa Hindu Parishat and Bajrang Dal to call for the district bandh instead of one-hour traffic blockade caught passengers arriving early morning unawares.

Commuters forced to cross rail tracks at Tambaram railway station

Water could not be pumped out of the subway at Tambaram Sanatorium railway station for three days due to a faulty motor —Photo: T. Madhavan

On Thursday, members of Railway Protection Force were helping commuters walk across the track to reach the Tambaram Sanatorium railway station. These policemen have been doing this for three consecutive days now.

With the Southern Railway administration unable to pump out rainwater stagnated in the pedestrian subway at the station, most commuters were forced to walk across the track to reach the suburban platforms.

Angry commuters approached the staff at the station and questioned them, only to be informed that the water could not be pumped out as the motor was not working and that they had informed their senior colleagues about the issue.

Commuters at Tambaram Sanatorium are unable to use the passenger subway and are crossing the railway tracks — something the Southern Railway administration campaigns against. Residents suffer every year during monsoon, but a permanent solution is yet to be found,” said P. Viswanathan of Chitlapakkam. Railway officials at Tambaram said the motor developed a snag and they were unable to locate maintenance staff till Wednesday owing to festival holidays.

From Thursday afternoon onwards, they started pumping out the water after the fault was attended to.
