Rationalization of Allotment of Berths under Physically Handicapped Quota with a View To Ensure Optimum Utilization
As per extant instructions, handicapped quota of 2 berths in sleeper class (one lower and one middle) is earmarked for physically handicapped persons travelling on concession.
There are two types of handicapped persons who can book berth under this quota; one for whom it is compulsory to travel along with escort and the second for whom it is optional. Recently instances were brought to the notice of this office where the handicapped persons for whom it is optional to take an escort were not allowed to book single berth against this quota by some Railways since the second berth will go vacant as middle berth cannot be allotted to physically handicapped persons. This issue has now been examined by the Ministry of Railways and further rationalization has been done to ensure optimum allotment and utilization of handicapped quota. The revised decisions taken are given as under : -

Indian Railways is purchasing electric power from State Electricity Boards for running the passenger and goods train on electric traction. Power is received at various Traction Sub-Stations (TSS) located along the railway tracks and is fed to the overhead traction conductors provided above the tracks.
Indian Railways is all set to launch their Make in India railway coaches soon and the trial runs for these coaches has already commenced between Bhopal and Bina railway stations in Madhya Pradesh. The coaches are uber comfortable and designed with many high-end features. The train experience will make it relatively more comfortable and convenient, for both, sleeper and sitting coaches with lesser jerks, better food, better sanitation and even a better decor. The new coaches have been made in India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new ‘Make in India’ campaign. The new coaches are manufactured at Coach Rehabilitation Workshop (CRWS) in Nishaputra, Bhopal.

New Delhi: Expanding further its e-catering facility, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has tied up with online delivery firm Foodpanda, enabling consumers to order from a variety of cuisine options.
The collaboration, to be launched at New Delhi railway station next month, will provide customers with the choice to order meals at least two hours before the travel, said IRCTC Chairman and Managing Director A K Manocha.
Indian Railways passengers can now satiate their taste buds by ordering from an array of cuisines, ranging from a humble vada pav to chicken chettinad to continental food, in addition to the food items provided by IRCTC. Officials with the catering wing of the railways said talks with Zomato, a restaurant listing and service provider, was also under way. People can order food items online while booking tickets, or they can soon call toll-free number 1323 to place an order for the delivery of food on trains.
In a much-needed relief to the physically-challenged persons availing concessional rail fares, Indian Railway shas rationalised provisions for allotment of berths in a sleeper class under such quota by earmarking middle seat for the accompanying passenger.
As per the revised provisions, which are to come into effect from December 22, there will be two types of physically-challenged quota of two berths each — one lower and one middle — in the same cabin.
In a landmark development, cash-strapped Indian Railways on Thursday started buying power from the ailingDabhol power plant in Maharashtra run by Ratnagiri Gas and Power Project (RGPPL), using its status of distribution licensee. This is in contrast to the current system of sourcing power from discoms at higher rates of average Rs 6-7 per unit.
To begin with, the national transporter has started purchasing 300 Megawatt (Mw) power at a rate of Rs 4.70 per unit — against the rate of Rs 8.50 per unit charged by Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) — helping railways save Rs 600 crore.
In line with the budget commitment made by Indian Railways towards installation of solar plants as part of its ‘Solar Mission’ to reduce dependency on fossil fuels, the transporter has come out with a policy on solar capacity panels on rooftops of railway stations. It has envisioned a plan to source 1,000 mw of solar power over five years besides establishing 132 mw of windmill plants by REMCL. Of the 1,000 mw which will be harnessed through solar power 500 mw will be generated through solar capacity panels on rooftops.
