Mumbai: The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has set in motion the process to procure the rolling stock (rakes) to run the services on the Metro-III corridor even though the bidders for the civil work are yet to be finalized.
Another push was given to the underground Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro as Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has floated bids to buy and install rolling stock or metro trains.
According to the bid document that has been made public, it is an “invitation for pre-qualification of bidders for design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of rolling stock”.
Rail minister Suresh Prabhu has called for implementation of a Zero Accident Mission
The rail ministry’s plan to seek around Rs 1 lakh crore (Rs 1 trillion) funding for the Special Railway Safety Fund from the finance ministry in response to the recent spurt in the number of train accidents seems to have missed out on a crucial affliction — the need to strengthen the operational staffing issues.
The rise in the cases of derailments of late has come at a time the brass at the railway board is gripped in an unusual setting — the absence of a full-time Member (Traffic), who looks after safety related aspects, for more than seven months since February.
Raipur: As the Left Wing Extremists eye to disrupt economic services in their stronghold in eastern States of Chhattisgarh and Odisha, a major mineral bearing belt, the Indian Railways is busy chalking out strategies to thwart Naxal activities in Kirandul-Koraput line which earns it about Rs.6000 crore in revenue annually.
While Chhattisgarh Police has stepped up anti-Maoist operations with significant success on its side of the border, the Odisha Police too has gone after the Left ultras to match the pressure. As a result, the security forces are anticipating increasing attacks by the Red rebels on communication infrastructure such as railway and roads.
As the two States aggressively push flush-out operations, Maoist attack is anticipated to rise on Kirandul-Koraput line which is a major freight corridor.
Sources said Chhattisgarh DGP AN Upadhyay had a meeting with Director General of Railway Protection Force RR Verma in this regard at New Delhi earlier this week which was followed by another round of meeting with Chief Security Commissioner (CRC) and IG of RPF, East Coast Railway Atul Pathak at Raipur.
New Delhi: The Railways on Thursday said it has earmarked two berths – one lower and one middle – in sleeper classes under the handicapped quota for physically challenged people travelling on concession.
There are two types of handicapped people who can book berth under this quota – one for whom it is compulsory to travel along with escort and the second for whom it is optional.
“Recently instances were brought to the notice of this office where the handicapped persons for whom it is optional to take an escort were not allowed to book single berth against this quota by some railways since the second berth will go vacant as middle berth cannot be allotted to physically handicapped persons,” the railways ministry said in a statement.
