Ministry of Railways - Train Movement During Fog

Fog severely reduces mobility of trains owing to reduced visibility and safety protocol (speed restriction) put in place. This reduces the capacity of already saturated rail corridors running through fog affected areas. Abnormal late running of trains result into unmanageable rake imbalances, heavy crew shortage due to increased working hours of drivers and guards and complete disorientation of time table, train berthing plans, maintenance slot at washing line complexes catering difficulties etc. due to late arrival of trains during fog.

To handle the above situation, Railways have resorted to cancellation and reduction of frequency of trains during foggy season from 08.01.2016 to 29.02.2016.

Documenting the history of a major railway line

The Palakkad-Pollachi line that links Kerala and Tamil Nadu has been an integral part of travel, commerce, pilgrimage and culture for 75 years.

The Railways have come up with a short film to depict the historical background and social relevance of the 54.72 km section that was reconstructed and reopened to rail traffic.

Past grandeur

Chugging through Centuries , the 20-minute documentary, also highlights the past grandeur of the Palakkad-Pollachi section that remains endearingly nostalgic for many. The stretch that remained out of bounds for gauge conversion since December 10, 2008, was thrown open again on November 15, 2015.

New Skywalk at Railway Station Soon

BENGALURU: The second foot overbridge (FOB) at the City railway station is nearing completion. Set to be inaugurated in January, the bridge is aimed at easing congestion in the station that witnesses a footfall of 2 lakh a day.

The construction, which utilised funds worth `4 crore and a whopping 300 metric tonnes of steel, began in October 2014.

“The overbridge will be of use to those using the Second Entry as it connects Platforms 7 and 8 to Platform 1. Only Platform 4 will not be part of it as it is very narrow,” said Sanjiv Agarwal, Divisional Railway Manager, Bangalore Division.

When the signal-free corridor planned at Okalipuram gets completed, more than 50 per cent of the passenger traffic to the City station is expected through this entry, he said.

The completion of this project, whose original deadline was October 2015, has suffered a three-month delay. “Shifting utilities like signaling cables across the station took more time than expected,” Agarwal said.

The stretches between Yelahanka and Odarpalli and Penukonda and Hindupur have been awarded to the concern, said Bengaluru Divisional Railway Manager Sanjeev Agarwal
