Facebook to hook up with RailTel in WiFi across Railway stations, nearby villages

Facebook recently concluded a pilot across 125 rural locations after purchasing bandwidth from state-run BSNL, and is currently in talks with various Internet service firms.

New Delhi: After Google, it is social media giant Facebook, which is looking to hook up with Indian Railways to provide WiFi across railway stations. R.K. Bahuguna, Chairman, RailTel Corporation of India Ltd (RailTel) said the company will start talks with Facebook for expanding its WiFi coverage not only to railway stations but to villages in the vicinity as well.

Railways today said the capacity augmentation on Delhi-Chennai and Howrah-Mumbai routes will be a “game changer” and aimed at meeting the increased freight traffic expected by 2020.

Railways has got cabinet approval for nine rail expansion projects involving laying a total of 1937 km long additional line in 11 states to ensure smooth freight and passenger movement.

CCEA approves new Railway routes on various busy sections

New Delhi: To cope with local demand and smoothen rail traffic, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Wednesday gave approval to construction of a third line on several busiest railway routes, including Itarsi-Nagpur, Jhansi-Bina and Mathur-Jhansi sections.

The CCEA meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The 280 km-long third line between Itarsi and Nagpur, given approval, is estimated to cost Rs 2,449.91 crore — with anticipated completion cost pegged at Rs 2,882.94 crore — and is expected to be completed in five years.

Google to help Indian Railways digitize Heritage assets

Google Heritage RailIndian Railways is collaborating with the Google Cultural Institute to exhibit its heritage assets like bridges, steam locomotives, buildings, artifacts and museums over the latter’s platform. The agreement will help the Railways digitize its assets which can then be accessed online for free.
The Railways also plans to launch a dedicated rail heritage website as well, although it does not provide a timeline for it. Other than this, the Railways claims it is in the process of preparing a comprehensive conservation management program to preserve and promote its heritage assets. The agency will also eventually offer online and virtual tours as ‘tourist attractions’.

Hyperloop concept was first released in 2013 by Tesla and SpaceX’s Elon Musk as an alternative to high-speed rail. Musk said he wanted to make Hyperloop an open-source project for high-speed transportation. Several separate entities have since been formed to explore the possibilities.
Musk’s white paper had the basic concept of how a pod could propel over 100,000 people at the speed of sound, from one city to another in vacuum tubes. It felt like an idea from the world of HG Wells. Within a year, two companies said they had raised money. One is Hyperloop Transportation Technology (HTT) and the other Hyperloop One – a Boeing or Airbus of the Hyperloop world.

New Delhi: Railways have decided to provide train fare concession to sportsmen certified only by Sports Authority of India (SAI) and not by the eight sports bodies, including table tennis and basket ball federations, which have been derecognised by Sports Ministry.

IRCTC-ATDC tie-up to boost tourism in State

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) and Assam Tourism Development Corporation Limited (ATDC) have joined hands to link their popular packages.le from Assam in getting better tour deals in other parts of the country through the IRCTC.
As per the agreement between the corporations, the IRCTC will act as a booking agent and utilise the ATDC properties and facilities for both inbound and outbound tourists of Assam. On the other hand, the rail tour packages operated by the IRCTC can also be sold from the ATDC.
With ‘Awesome Assam’ as brand entity, the Assam Tourism is also in the process of roping in a big name from either the Indian film world or the sports arena as its brand ambassador to catch the fancy of backpackers. Value-added packages will give a further fillip to the tourism promotion.

Hike in Coal Freight charges to impact domestic cement industry

New Delhi: Hike in coal freight charges by Railways will adversely impact the domestic cement industry with a hit of over Rs 2,000 crore and is likely to force companies to pass on the burden to consumers, industry experts say.

Last week, Indian Railways facing a shortfall in freight loading, rationalised its coal tariff by reducing long-distance transportation rates, while raising it for short distances. It also imposed a Rs 110 per tonne coal terminal surcharge at loading and unloading for distances beyond 100 km.

KRCL to start electrification, track-doubling works after monsoon

IR calls off negotiations with Kawasaki-led Consortia to procure, manufacture locos

In a setback to Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu’s plans to contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, the Indian Railways (IR) have called off negotiations with a Japanese consortium for the acquisition/indigenous manufacture of Next-Gen locos of 9000 horsepower under what had been proposed as a Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreement.

Indian Railways approves C-DOT Gears for WiFi services

New Delhi: WiFi technology of state-run Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) has been approved by Indian Railways, Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha said today. “C-DoT WiFi Technology got approved by Railways,” Sinha tweeted.

Indian Railway is rolling out free WiFi service at busy stations. It has plans to roll out Google supported free WiFi service at 100 stations by end of this year and 400 by the end of next year.
