Special Cleanliness Campaign under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched on Indian Railways

Cleanliness in Railways 

Special Cleanliness Campaign under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched on Indian Railways on 2nd October, 2014. Regular intensive campaigns/drives have been organised since then over the Indian Railways with the sole objective towards significant and sustainable improvements in cleanliness standards of Trains and Railway premises, including Railway stations. Some of the major initiatives taken by Indian Railways towards sanitation/cleanliness are as follows:

Utilisation of Renewable Energy

Vision 2020 document of the Indian Railways envisages to utilize at least 10% of its energy requirement from renewable sources. 

Indian Railways (IR) has planned to source about 1000 Mega Watt (MW) Solar Power as part of its Solar Mission. Further, Indian Railways also plans to harness about 200 MW of wind power in next five years based on techno commercial assessment. Out of this, about 50 MW (14 MW solar and 36 MW wind power) renewable power has already been set up. 

CCTVs In Suburban Trains

Sanction for provision of CCTV cameras in 500 coaches has been obtained under the Rolling Stock Programme 2015-16. Work has already been completed in about 25 passenger coaches and 32 suburban coaches that have been commissioned in service.

Rail Radio Service

As announced by the Minister of Railways in the Railway Budget 2016-17, it is proposed to provide train borne entertainment by installing Public Address systems in trains. Details have not been finalized but no expense is envisaged by Railways as the services are to be operated by selected licensees, through commercial advertisements.

Bogibeel National Project of Railways

Construction of Rail-cum-Road bridge over the Brahmaputra at Bogibeel with linking lines (73 km) has been taken up at an anticipated cost of Rs. 4996 crore. An expenditure of Rs.4129 crore has been incurred upto March, 2016 and an outlay of Rs. 598 crore has been provided in 2016-17.

Travel Insurance In Indian Railways

An Optional Travel Insurance Scheme on a pilot basis for one year has been launched w.e.f 01.09.2016 for the Railway passengers who book e-ticket through official website of Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). The insurance scheme is available on optional basis for all reserved classes (SL, 1AC, 2AC, 3AC) and trains except passenger trains and sub-urban trains for tickets booked online on the IRCTC websites.

Rail Connectivity To State Capitals

All State Capitals except the State of Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Sikkim are connected by Broad Gauge Railway Line. In Goa, Broad Gauge rail connectivity exists upto Madgaon and Vasco-da-Gama stations. The summer Capital of Jammu & Kashmir, Srinagar is connected

Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu in the presence of Chief Minister of Jharkhand Shri Raghubar Das, inaugurated Hazaribagh - Barkakana section of Koderma - Ranchi New Railway line project. Also flagged off extension of Koderma - Hazaribagh Town Passenger upto Barkakana. Minister of State for Railways Shri Rajen Gohain was specially present on the occasion. Chairman Railway Board Shri AK Mital and other Railway Board Members were also present on the occasion.

Presently, 1885 numbers of Rain Water Harvesting systems have been installed at different locations which also include Railway Stations on Indian Railways in various Zones; the Zone-wise position is as under:

Insurance Scheme For Railway Passengers

Providing state-of-the-art facilities at Railway Station

The station redevelopment projects, which envisage provision of state-of-the-art facilities to the travelling public, are intrinsically complex and require high degree of project planning, detailed techno-economic feasibility studies and in-principle approval from various local bodies before bidding can be taken up. Hence, such projects generally have long gestation periods.

Measures To Prevent Railway Accidents

The measures announced to prevent accidents and ensure safety in the  last two Railway Budgets were, Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) on High Density Network, elimination of unmanned level crossings in a phased manner and review the recommendations of High-Level Safety Review Committee headed by Dr. Kakodkar.

Levitation Trains

Indian Railways have floated an expression of interest for designing, building, commissioning, operation, running and maintenance of levitation-based train system on public private partnership basis. The Railway route for this project has not been defined at such an early stage of the project since the initial thrust of the project is on developing and implementing a cost effective solution of such a technology.

Introduction of fully unreserved Antyodaya Express trains

Introduction of fully unreserved Antyodaya Express trains on dense routes for the common man has been announced in Railway Budget 2016-17. As of now, introduction of 7 Antyodaya Express trains has been notified. The details are as under:

Electrification of Railway Tracks

Indian Railways have prepared an Action Plan to electrify 24400 route kilometers   in five years (2016-17 to 2020-21).  Presently Central Organization for Railway Electrification (CORE), Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and Zonal Railways are  executing electrification works.  To increase the pace of electrification, following three Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) have been assigned the work of electrification:-

Minister of Railways inspects the rake of Humsafar Express रेल मंत्री ने हमसफर एक्सप्रेस के रेक का निरीक्षण किया

Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu inspected the rake of Humsafar Express today i.e. 9 December 2016 at Delhi Safdarjung Railway Station. In his Budget Speech of 2016-17, he had announced the introduction of Humsafar Express, as a fully air-conditioned third AC service with an optional service for meals.


Accordingly, the first Humsafar rake comprising of LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) AC – 3 Tier coaches and Power cars has been turned out from Modern Coach Factory, Raebareli on 12th November 2016. The Humsafar coaches offer better facilities / amenities for the passengers, some of which are listed below:

1.                  Aesthetically pleasing colour scheme with anti-graffiti coating and distinctive 3D numbering on the exterior.
2.                  Pleasing interiors with attractive and colourfully co-ordinated seats, berths, partitions, curtains, improved/hygienic toilets, film type mirrors, etc.
3.                  Deodorizer, Dustbins, Sleek bottle holders in the cabins
4.                  Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance of the common areas of the coaches.
5.                  Integrated Braille displays for the visually impaired.
6.                  Hygienic lavatories with odour flushing system
7.                  Global Positioning System (GPS) based Passenger information system
8.                  Passenger announcement system
9.                  Fire and Smoke detection system in the coaches.
10.              Fire detection and suppression system in the Power cars
11.              Equipped with Auto Vending Machine and Mini Pantry with Oven/Fridge
A total of 10 Humsafar trains have been announced by the Ministry of Railways in the new time table. Of these, Train No. 12595 Gorakhpur-Anand Vihar (T) Humsafar Express, with a composition of 16 AC 3 Tier coaches and 2 Power cars, shall be the first Humsafar train that is going to be inaugurated soon.  
It is planned to manufacture 10 Humsafar rakes during the current financial year at Modern Coach Factory, Raebareli and Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala. The cost of a Humsafar AC 3 Tier coach Rs.2.58 crores, as compared to Rs.2.39 crores for a normal LHB AC 3 Tier coach.



रेल मंत्री श्री सुरेश प्रभु ने आज यानी 9 दिसंबर2016 को दिल्ली सफदरजंग रेलवे स्टेशन पर हमसफर एक्सप्रेस के रेक का निरीक्षण किया। अपने बजट भाषण 2016-17 में उन्होंने नई ट्रेन हमसफर एक्सप्रेस शुरू करने की घोषणा की थी। यह ट्रेन पूरी तरह से थर्ड एसी होगी और इसमें भोजन की सुविधा भी होगीजो कि वैकल्पिक सेवा होगी।

घोषणा को अमल में लाने की प्रक्रिया के तहत एलबीएच (लिंके हॉफमैन बुश) एसी-3 टायर कोच और पावर कार 12 नवंबर2016 को रायबरेली स्थित मॉडर्न कोच फैक्ट्री से बाहर आए। हमसफर एक्सप्रेस के कोचों में यात्रियों को बेहतर सविधाएं दी जाएंगीजिनमें से कुछ इस प्रकार हैं-  

1. इसका एक्सटीरियर पर एंटी-ग्रेफिटी कोटिंग और विशिष्ट 3 डी नंबरिंग होगी। इसके रंग भी बेहद आकर्षक होंगे। 

2. कोच में सीटेंबर्थपार्टिशनकर्टेन्सशौचालयशीशे काफी अच्छे होंगे।

3. केबिन में डियोडराइजरडस्टबिनबोटल होल्डर की सुविधा।

4. कोच के कॉमन एरिया में सीसीटीवी से निगरानी

5. नेत्रहीनों के लिए एकीकृत ब्रेल डिस्प्ले

6. ऑडोर फ्लशिंग सिस्टम के साथ स्वच्छ शैचालय

7. जीपीएस आधारित पैसेंजर इंफोर्मेशन सिस्टम

8. पैसेंजर अनाउंसमेंट सिस्टम

9. कोचों में आग और धुएं का पता लगाने वाली पद्धति

10. ऑटो वेंडिंग मशीन और ओवन/फ्रिज के साथ मिनी पैंट्री


नई समय सारिणी में रेल मंत्रालय द्वारा कुल 10 हमसफर ट्रेनों की घोषणा की गई है। इनमें से ट्रेन नंबर 12595 गोरखपुर-आनंद विहार (टी) हमसफर एक्सप्रेसजिसमें 16 एससी 3 टायर कोच हैंका जल्द ही उद्घाटन किया जाएगा। 

ऐसी योजना है कि मौजूदा वित्तीय वर्ष में रायबरेली की मॉडर्न कोच फैक्ट्री और कपूरथला स्थित रेल कोच फैक्ट्री में 10 हमसफर रेक बनाए जाएंगे। सामान्य एलबीएच एसी 3 टायर कोच की लागत 2.39 करोड़ की तुलना में हमसफर एसी 3 टायर कोच की लागत 2.58 करोड़ रुपये है।

  2. The use of Rs 500 notes had been allowed till midnight of December 15 for a number of purposes, including public transport, purchasing railway, metro, and airline tickets (at airports), and railway catering.The demonetised Rs 500 notes

Trainman And Ola Team up to Boost Mobility For Indian Railway Travelers

Trainman, the online platform that caters to Indian Railway travellers by assisting them with extensive train related information and intelligence, has partnered with Ola.

The tie-up enables Trainman consumers to book Ola rides while travelling to and from railway stations or anywhere in the city.

The service will be made available to users of the Trainman android app across India where Ola is currently operational.
