For Pranjal Patil, a 28-year-old visually challenged woman from Ulhasnagar, cracking the UPSC exam in her first attempt has proved far easier than getting a government job. Because, the gritty woman has been running from pillar to post after being informed that she would get a job in the Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS). And the reason is: the Railways now claims that someone who is visually challenged is ineligible for the job.

Railways may miss revenue target by ₹12,000 cr this fiscal


The operating ratio of the Railways is expected to worsen to 94 for the present fiscal from the budgeted projections of 92, a top Railway Ministry official said here on Monday. Operating ratio is a measure of profitability, and represents an expenditure of 94 paise for earning ₹1.

Indian Railways announce 10% rebate in vacant train berths

The Railways on Friday said that it has decided to extend, for six months, the 10% rebate in basic fare on the vacant berths or seats in the reserved class of all other trains after preparation of the first chart.

"Indian Railways has decided to extend the rebate of 10% in the reserved class of all other trains with effect from January 1, 2017 on an experimental basis for six months," the Rail ministry said in a statement.

Trainsets, Talgo biggest challenges for railways in 2017

The Railway Ministry's biggest challenge as far as trains is concerned in 2017 would be to clear the deadlock in which it finds its two most ambitious projects— the procurement of the much-hyped Spanish Talgo rakes and the purchase of the high-speed trainsets to replace the current Rajdhanis and Shatabdi services.

The reason, according to officials in the know, is that only if the paperwork is completed this year would the two sets of trains arrive and be commissioned in time to showcase for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

According to sources, the government is unlikely to hike the passengers fare in the first combined General and Railway Budget. The decision on hike in passengers fare will be taken by the Finance Ministry as no separate Railway Budget will be presented. Sources said the government wants to increase passengers fare to improve infrastructure and services of Indian Railways, but the move is unlikely to be taken considering Assembly elections in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur.

Railways see spike in cashless transactions

In a first, the Indian Railways earned more than half its reserved ticket revenues on January 1 through cashless means, a Railway Board member has said.

“Around 51 per cent of our earnings from railway tickets came through the cashless route on January 1, which is a record for the Indian Railways,” Railway Member, Traffic, Mohd. Jamshed told The Hindu.

Railway mishap rate in Thane zone down by 10% in 2016 compared to previous year

THANE: Intensive awareness campaigns about safe travel on trains and vigil along several track-crossing spots has helped the Central Railways reduce the mishap rate by nearly 10% in the Thane zone in 2016 compared to the previous year.

The Mumbai railway police statistics reveal that the number of fatal accidents in 2016 was 351 while in the year before, 391 people had died in various rail-related mishaps. The volume of injured passengers has also reduced to 354 this year.
