CHANDIGARH: Smog delayed 15 trains on Wednesday, affecting hundreds of passengers.
Two Shatabdi Express
plying from New Delhi to Kalka were late. According to railways officials, Shatabdi Express (12011), which leaves New Delhi at 7.40am and arrives at the Chandigarh railway station at 11.05 am, reached at 2.48 pm. Shatabdi Express (12005), which leaves New Delhi at 5.15pm and arrives here at 8.40pm, was late by 52 minutes. This is the third consecutive day when the Shatabdi trains plying from New Delhi were delayed.
Even Himalayan Queen was delayed by more than three hours.
The most affected were passengers commuting in long-route trains. The Kalka Mail (Howrah to Kalka) was delayed by eight hours, Unchahar Express from Allahabad to Chandigarh by six hours and 15 minutes and Dibrugarh Express
from Dibrugarh to Chandigarh by seven hours and 51 minutes.
Official of the Northern Railway said due to reduced mobility and speed, trains reached their destinations late and had to be rescheduled for their return journey or cancelled. “Late running of trains leads to rake shortage. There is also a shortage of crew (loco pilots and guards) due to longer duration of working hours on a particular train,” officials added.
