Railway passengers will enjoy free WiFi facilities at over 4,000 stations soon. According to an Indian Express report, Tata Group has been roped in by the Indian Railways to provide high-speed wireless internet free-of-cost at stations. The project will be part of Tata Trusts’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

According to the report, Tata Trusts will provide WiFi service free of charge at eight railway stations between Mysore and Bengaluru. The system will later be rolled out across India. Tata Trusts will carry out this project as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility which means that Railways won’t have to pay anything for this.

It is to be noted that Google already provides wireless internet service at 400 stations. Director General, Signal and Telecommunications, Railway Board, N Kashinath was quoted in the report saying, “We will be signing an MoU with Tata Trusts for 4,000-plus stations.” If this pans out successfully, it will be the largest CSR initiative on Railways, the report added.

Worth mentioning here is that railway minister Piyush Goyal is keen to provide free WiFi facility at all railway stations as soon as possible as he believes that it has benefited the commuters immensely. He has even announced that the railway divisions who manage to provide this facility soon will be awarded for their effort.

So far, over 700 railway stations in India offer free wireless internet service to passengers. Railways is planning to take this number to 2,000 as soon as possible. RailTel, PowerGrid Corporation and Google are providing WiFi facility at stations now and soon Tata will too.
