Central Railway stays o­n top in scrap revenue- Achieves highest percentage increase among all Zonal Railways up to November-2023

“Zero Scrap” mission gains momentum – registers 34.09 % increase of Sale of Scrap over proportionate sale target for period up to November-2023

Central Railway’s determined efforts to turn scrap into revenue have yielded impressive results. It stays o­n top having achieved the highest percentage increase in scrap sales among all Zonal Railways.

Central Railway has taken significant steps to identity and dispose off various types of scrap, including overaged Locos, Diesel Surplus Locos, un-operational rail lines and overaged or accidental locos/coaches, thereby turning its scrap into revenue. This is part of its “Zero-Scrap” mission to ensure that every Division, Workshop, and Shed is entirely free from scrap materials within a prescribed time.

Central Railway registered scrap sales of Rs. 248.07 Crores as o­n 30.11.2023 which is a remarkable 82.69 % of the sales target of Rs.300 crores. This indicates a remarkable increase of 34.09% as against proportionate sale target of 185 crores, which is higher than the proportionate sale target for the period.

This is the highest percentage increase in scrap sales among all Zonal Railways.

A total of 18,229 metric tonnes of rail scrap has been sold as o­n 30.11.2023.

This includes

7,994 MT from Bhusaval division,

4,144 MT from Mumbai division,

3,748 MT from Nagpur division,

1,280 MT from Solapur division, and

1,063 MT from Pune division

This has also been achieved through sale of-

·13 Locomotives,

·216 Coaches,and

·124 Wagons (Including 20 KM Jamner-Pachora Section Narrow Gauge Line in Bhusawal division.)

Division wise contribution of scrap sales of Rs.248.07 crores is as follows:

1.Bhusawal Division achieved Scrap sale of Rs.49.20 Crores.

2.Matunga Depot achieved Scrap sale of Rs.40.58 Crores.

3.Mumbai Division achieved Scrap sale of Rs.36.39 Crores

4.Electric loco shed Depot of Bhusaval achieved Scrap sale of Rs.23.67 Crores.

5.Nagpur division achieved Scrap sale of 22.32 Crores

6.Pune division achieved Scrap sale of 22.31 Crores.

7.Solapur Division achieved Scrap sale of Rs.20.70 Crores and

8.Other Depots like Parel, Haji Bunder-Sewri, Manmad and Currey Road registered combined scrap sale of Rs.32.90 Crores

Disposal of abandoned railway structures

The Central Railway Material Management Deparment is also instrumental in demolition and disposal of abandoned railway structures like residential quarters for employees to make way for new constructions to commence.

During the period April to November 2023, a total of 1,493 residential quarters were declared abandoned including 489 in Nagpur division, 385 in Solapur division, 305 in Mumbai division, 258 in Bhusaval division and 56 in Pune division.

Of the above a total of 1,222 structures were given o­n contract to competitive parties for demolition and clearing of debris. This included 431 in Nagpur division, 384 in Solapur division, 305 in Mumbai division, 46 in Bhusaval division and 56 in Pune division.

Central Railway remains steadfast in its commitment for achieving a scrap-free status for all Divisions and Depots under the ambit of the Zero Scrap Mission besides surpassing the Railway Board Target of Rs. 300 Cr for year 2023-24.
